Living in Italian: Sicilian Tuna Avocado Boats
Sicilian tuna is world renowned given Sicily's long history & relationship with the sea. Sicilian fisherman pack the tuna in extra virgin olive oil and pair it with pane cassata "bread dried by the sun." Sicilian tuna is very different from the tuna we are familiar with in the US. During the months of May and June, the peak months yielding tuna, most if not all meals in Sicily are comprised of tuna.
During the spring, tuna migrate through the Mediterranean Sea, towards the coast of Sicily. The tuna is traditionally caught by drift netting. Due to the brutality of its nature, the Italians settled with a formal name of "Mattanza" which indicates carnage of the tuna. Very dramatic, very Italian. The other ingredients like mint and roasted peepers sott olio, "marinated in olive oil" are traditional flavors of that region. These Sicilian tuna filled avocado boats are great appetizers for your next cocktail or dinner party!
