Food as Sunscreen? Skin Defense for a Healthy Glow

It's summer and the perfect time to enjoy the weather and soak up the sun. But remember excessive UV radiation from the sun may increase your risk of skin cancer, aging, and dehydration. In addition to sunscreen and minimizing your exposure to the sun, certain foods have been shown to help increase the skin's defense mechanisms. Food to Help Protect Your Skin

  • Watermelon: is incredibly hydrating thanks to its high water content and contains lycopene, an antioxidant found in most red fruits and vegetables that protects your cells, including your skin, against harmful effects of free radicals and damage. It's also a source of immune-boosting and collagen building vitamin C!

  • Tomatoes: also a great source of the antioxidant lycopene which will help protect against the harmful damage from the sun

  • Mangoes: contain the antioxidant beta-carotene, also found in orange, yellow, and dark green fruits and vegetables (like sweet potato, papaya, carrots, or kale), and is a source of vitamin A, which is also helps boost your immune system

  • Avocados (walnuts, almonds, flax seeds, or salmon): all great sources of the heart healthy omega-3 fats, which have anti-inflammatory and helps reduce inflammation to skin making it less susceptible to damage

  • Pomegranates: are a great source of vitamin C which is essential to produce collagen and other proteins needed to strengthen your skin

  • Turmeric: the active ingredient in this spice is curcumin which is a strong anti-oxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties and helps boosts your body's natural antioxidant mechanisms 

  • Green Tea: filled with polyphenols that reduce inflammation and protect your body against damage and reduce your risk for certain cancers like breast, prostate or colon.
