I can't live without my coffee and it is an Italian way of life! Cappuccino in the morning and espresso rest of the day is the protocol of Living in Italian (see full series here!) Thank goodness it has great health benefits too.
1. Boosts Metabolism
The caffeine in coffee makes it a natural central nervous system stimulant. This is what boosts your metabolism about 5-8%!
2. Lowers Risk of Chronic Diseases
Studies have found associations between coffee intake and reduced risk of some diseases like: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and colorectal cancer.
3. Can Fuel Your Workout
The energy provided with caffeine can fuel your workout by providing you with more adrenaline and more blood pumping through your system, thus giving you more energy.
4. Antioxidant Power
Coffee is actually a leading provider of several antioxidants. Many of those antioxidants improve immune health and are disease-preventing. They also have anti-aging powers.
5. Boosts Memory
Although still a theory, there have been many studies that seem to prove this idea true. Caffeine is a brain stimulant and blocks the chemical in your brain called adenosine which, itself, blocks brain-stimulating chemicals.
Tips for Healthy Coffee Intake:
Caffeine can dehydrate you, so drink at least 2 liters of water per day
Do not drink more than 400 mg of coffee per day, roughly 3 to 5 8-oz cups of coffee per day *Per USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015-2020, scientific evidence showed adults who consume moderate amounts of coffee are not at increased risk for developing chronic diseases and coffee can be incorporated into healthy eating patterns.
Do not drink after 2 pm because it may disrupt your sleep later that night, for those of you having trouble sleeping
Feel free to add 1% to 2% milk to coffee. Remember you need some fat in your milk for your body to best absorb vitamin D and calcium!
Do not make your coffee dessert by adding tons of sugar found in frappacino, etc. Sugar and milk should elevate your coffee not mask it!
