Probiotics are live microorganisms that are believed to provide health benefits when consumed. Probiotics and prebiotics can be found in many foods that do not have to be eaten alone and when incorporated into your everyday meals can be quick and easy additives. Some of those foods include, garlic, onions (raw and cooked), yogurt, bananas, greek yogurt, fermented vegetables and much more. My favorite with most bang for the bacteria buck is kefir- brands Lifeway and Wallaby are my favorites! Choose low fat plain: drink, add to smoothies or cereal or make a kefir bowl with fruit and nuts! I love using kefir in smoothies, like my ultimate hangover smoothie or de-bloating smoothie!
Here are top reasons to add probiotics to your diet:
1: Boosts Immune System
Probiotics are known to defend your body against disease-causing microorganisms, lower inflammation and ensure a healthy functioning immune system.
2: Improves Digestion
Although bacteria has a common negative connotation, our body does contain bacteria that are both good and bad. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are under the category of good bacteria and help keep a healthy gut.
3: Fight against Food Borne Illness
Since the large majority of the body’s immune cells are located in the digestive tract and the probiotic microorganism that live there assist in immune functions, the defense against the disease-causing pathogens is very strong when increased with more probiotics (good bacteria). The bacteriocins that probiotics produce directly harm the pathogens and eliminate them from the body.
4: Keeps you Regular
Probiotics keep a healthy gut so that all of your digestive functions are properly running. It makes sure your digestive system works as it should to utilize nutrients in food and eliminate wastes we don't need! There is also evidence that bad bacteria in the gut can link to unhealthy weight gain and belly fat. By incorporating probiotics into your diet, you can eliminate some of the unhealthy weight through replacing bad bacteria with good bacteria. This creates bodily balance that helps keep you regular and allows you to be your best healthy self!
5. Supports Mental Health
Since your gut is a producer of serotonin, the happy molecule, and many other important neurotransmitters that effect mood, keeping a healthy and well-balanced gut is very important.
