Foodie Guide to Broadway Bites: Our Top 5
The fall pop-up market Broadway Bites is back again in Greeley Square (a small nook on 33rd Street and 6th Avenue) until November 24! Urbanspace, who produces the event was founded in the 1970’s by Eric Reynolds, whose company Urban Space Management had helped 50+ projects helping small cities, small businesses, and the arts to flourish. Some projects that took place by Urban Space Management in London include famous New York Hot Spots, such as The Chelsea Market and Elephant and Castle. In 1993, Eldon Scott decamped from London to New York. Since then, a variety of pop-ups have been created in New York in locations such as Union Square, Madison Square, Dekalb Market, Greeley Square, and the Columbus Circle Holiday Market .
Attending this event was any foodies dream. Here are my top 5 picks:
1. Gotham Poke
This was by far my favorite of all to indulge in. Gotham Poke gets their seafood fresh from a variety of places due to their seasonality. Their tuna is either from Hawaii or Japan, and their Salmon is from Scotland. Most of the food is prepared in their location on 14th, between 8th and 9th avenues. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Poke, which had the freshest Tuna I have ever eaten. The Poke was very light, with vegetables that were cut into spirals in house, hijiki seaweed, ginger, and onions.
Healthy Pick! For those individuals who want something light, flavorful, and healthful, I would highly recommend this option.
2. Casa Toscana
Casa Toscana is a unique pop up due to the fact that it serves savory italian cuisine as well as gelato and sorbet imported from Italy. Their chicken flatbread was flaky yet crisp and the chicken that topped it was seasoned with herbs such as rosemary and thyme that really shined through. I was not done there, a girl has to have her dessert! I had the mango sorbet and the pistachio gelato. The sorbet tasted more like ice cream, which is a huge plus for those who are lactose intolerant. It was creamy, rich, and true to flavor. The pistachio gelato was brown instead of green, because they use roasted organic pistachios instead of unroasted. The flavor from the roasting process was evident in the boldness of the flavor in the gelato. They also have a location in Columbus Circle with more Italian delights.
Chingu New Korean is a pop up that opened in April, and unlike most others here in Greeley Square, they prepare in house as opposed to others that use restaurant kitchens. John, the founder, uses Korean meat from a butcher in Queens, who cuts the meat specifically for their meals. I ordered the spicy pork burger, which blew my mind! The bun of the burger was made of noodles shaped like a bun. It was almost as if I was eating a soup! The flavors of the pork were spicy, sweet, and full of flavor. Even better was the combination of the unique bun and seasoned pork. This was certainly a home run in terms of flavor and texture.
4. Todaro Bros
Who doesn’t enjoy an Italian cold cut sandwich on ciabatta bread? Todaro brothers is an Italian Sandwich pop up that also has a restaurant location in Midtown East on 31st and 2nd. The Italian Combo is their signature sandwich that created a symphony in my mouth. The sandwich included prosciutto, salami, capicola, provolone, arugula, roasted peppers, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. The combination of flavors from the different meats made for a killer sandwich!
Like Todaro Bros, this pop up cooks up their lobster in their restaurant in Brooklyn. The lobster they use is fresh and imported from the coasts of Maine. I ordered the Maine Lobster Roll, which was as simple as it sounds. This five ingredient fix allowed the lobster to speak for itself, and let me tell you, it SCREAMED! The roll was lightly buttered, and the ratio of lobster to roll was 2:1. The star of the show was the lobster that was bursting out of the roll. I would highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates a lobster roll “done right”.
