Food Network Star finalist Chef Malcolm Mitchell prepared an outstanding dinner for Black Chef Series. This Series is dedicated to provide a platform for African-American Chefs to showcase their talent to a captive audience. Not only did the tasteful presentation of the dishes capture my undivided attention, one dish completely blew me away. Beet salad has always been something I avoided but Chef Malcolm paired the symphony of colors and multitude of flavors into a blissful summer presentation.
As the courses were served throughout the night I got the sense as if it represented the transition of Summer into Fall. The sweet flavor of lobster tempura falls into the comforting five spice empanadas with roasted pheasant. The roasted pheasant came with a little surprise of fried shiitake mushrooms that tasted like bacon….. Best vegan bacon? I certainly think so!
The night of great company and eloquent speeches was completed with a well put together warm brioche bread pudding. Other than dessert being my favorite part of every meal, this pudding had me bouncing in my chair a little. One guest went missing during dessert and I was ready to fight my new friends for that extra portion. Unfortunately for me it was reclaimed, the pudding was well enjoyed and I got to keep my new friends. Black Chef Series also took the consideration to include the community by giving back 20% of all ticket sales to City Harvest. I am so looking forward to the next Black Chef Series Event!
