Surf’s up, the weather is beautiful and it is time to hit the sand and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul! We have been longing for this time of year when we can kick back and immerse ourselves in long days on the beach. We love the feel of the warm sand running through our toes but we would prefer to keep it out of our food! Trying to use utensils with the wind and sand can present a challenge while trying to enjoy your beach time. Typical foods we pack for the beach include crackers, chips, dried fruit and granola bars or we try to pack more meal-type foods which can be difficult to manage. How about we add some ease to your outing with more substantial foods to sustain optimum energy levels. Fun in the sun will surely generate a big appetite. With some simple planning you can pack up the cooler and have a fun-filled and healthy day at the beach.
Bread tends to get soggy; however, whole-wheat wraps hold their shape and provide a good source of fiber which helps keep you fuller. Fill your wrap with sources of protein such as chicken and cheese and throw in some raw vegetables for added crunch. Sauces and watery vegetables such as tomatoes can increase the likelihood of a soggy wrap so keep those on the side. For a quality dose of heart-healthy fat, pack single servings of guacamole and add to your wrap just prior to serving.
Hard Boiled Eggs
Hard-boiled eggs are an easy grab and go food. In one egg you will provide yourself seven grams of protein, another source of vitamin D (in addition to the sun!) and, zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that is protective for your eyes.
Whole fruit such as cherries, apples, oranges, peaches and berries are easy to pack and certainly a refreshing treat for a hot day on the beach. Fresh fruit also provides a source of fluid from food and maintaining good hydration is essential for your beach planning. Mouthwatering fruit kebabs with melon and berries are another idea, although with a touch more care than taking whole fruit. Planned properly with the right packaging, your fresh fruit kebabs will survive the journey.
Raw vegetables are a flavorful and nutrient-dense snack for on-the-go or kicking back on the beach. Mini sweet peppers, radishes, cherry tomatoes, carrot sticks, celery sticks, broccoli, cucumber and sugar snap peas are an array of vegetables sure to please. For a protein boost, pack some single-serve hummus for dipping.
Cheese and Crackers
Hey, why not stay and watch the sunset! Slice cheese ahead of time, pack a box of crackers, grab a travel-friendly tray and viola!...you have cocktail hour watching the sunset. Don’t forget the wine!
