The National Harbor is located in Maryland, about an hour south of DC, but provides a relaxing break from the fast-pace of the city. The National Harbor is a collection of shops, restaurants and bars located right on the water. We visited Rosa Mexicano, which was every bit as good as their NYC locations, but we recommend you check out something new! While you’re there, you can also take a ride on the Capital Wheel, which leads out over the water for an amazing view, or have a drink on the deck behind the wheel. On some nights they also offer movies on a large screen in front of the water!
Escape to Peru at NazcaMochica
NazcaMochica is a Peruvian Restaurant named after both the Northern and Southern Regions of Peru. The bottom floor serves tapas plates from Mochica, the Northern region of Peru while the top floor serves dishes from Nazca, the Southern Region. If you’re looking to try a variety from the classic Peruvian fried chicken, this is the place to go. We visited Nazca, where we tried the Causitas, Aji de Gallina, and Seco de Cordero. All of our meals tasted fresh, and were authentic in flavor. NazcaMochica also serves authentic Pisco, a signature drink from the South of Peru.
Walk around the National Mall
For a bit of exercise, culture and a view, walk around the National Mall. Although this area is busy with many tourists, it offers amazing views, and a peaceful setting without cars and traffic. If you get hungry along the way, visit one of the many food trucks lined up along 14th Street! On a rainy day, wait out the weather with a visit to the Smithsonian where you can explore many museums.
Enjoy a Treat at Paul
Paul is a small café north of the National Mall with good coffee and even better treats. Take a mid-morning break to try one of their chocolate croissants with a coffee, and pretend you’ve escaped to France, even for just a minute. In addition to light, buttery croissants filled with dark chocolate, Paul bakery also serves large macarons, tarts, flans, and breads of all type. If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, check out their meals- although we didn’t try them, we thought they looked great!
Taste the Union Market
Union Market, an indoor market with a collection of restaurants, bars, and specialty food stations, is located on the north end of the city. The market offers everything from arepas and empanadas to burgers, seafood, barbeque, and of course- dessert! We visited Buffalo & Bergen, which offers knishes, bagel sandwiches (made with New York Water Bagels!), and a large drink menu. We tried the delicious South Philly and Chicken Salad Bagels, along with the Mojito, which had a surprising citrus kick! Buffalo & Bergen also features a soda fountain, and serves frozen drinks from an airstream trailer outside when the weather is nice. We recommend you visit the market and have a taste for yourself!
