Prepare for the Beer, Bourbon, A-Pork-alypse!
This saturday 10th anniversary of the Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Festival at the Tunnel in Chelsea. With over 60 beers, 40 bourbons and enough bbq for the “a-pork-alypse,” it was every Southerner’s dream! While it may seem overwhelming for a newbie, luckily we went last year and knew exactly what to expect (2015 Beer, Bourbon, BBQ, Oh My! here).
Of course when I first walked into this tunnel of decadence, souvenir glass in hand ready to taste some bourbon, I was greeted with the ceremonial “Shrine of Swine” by the Handsome Devils hacking away at a whole hog. The plates of melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork with a splash of their slightly vinegary sauce was enough to take me to heaven. Yet that was just the beginning!

Never disappoints, especially with their tender sweet bourbon ribs! Washed down with a full glass of my favorite cider of the night below.
Is it just me, or do us New Yorkers think the only thing Boston churns out are boisterous frat boys and Ben Affleck? Assumptions aside, the original cider from Down East was light and crisp, perfect with a plate of ribs!
Just the right caramel undertones to warm me up. Also served up a cute cocktail!
They never disappoint, this year they served up a refreshing cooler with grapefruit juice, honey and lemon!
Takes the cake for most creative. Wasabi whiskey. Yup you heard right! Days after and I still don’t know how I feel about it. All I know is the wasabi was the star!
Can I Still Have My Beer/Bourbon and Be Healthy Too?
Yes! Don’t worry, I’m putting our nutrition hats back on! We all know Fiorella loves a good bourbon, so even dietitians indulge! But who's to say you can’t too? The USDA just released the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans which stated that adults of legal drinking age who drink can have a healthy eating pattern if alcohol is consumed in moderation. Moderation means one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. In theory, alcoholic drinks themselves aren’t so unhealthy (although read Nutrition RX: What Alcohol Does to Your Body here), usually it's any accompaniments that aren’t great. Often when you’re kicking back with a drink you’re eating a plate of wings, a juicy burger or something fried.

Stay away from deep-fried anything--baking, grilling or a nice sear in a pan will do the trick for texture and flavor!
Load up on Vegetables! When in doubt munch on a vegetable, the possibilities are endless. Eat raw with hummus, pesto or yogurt dip; or top on a flatbread or bruschetta
Keep your salt in check--Overly processed food like chips and packaged foods are loaded with sodium, and make you want to drink more. Instead prepare your own dishes or season with herbs and spices!
