5 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Winter Months!

January 5, 2016

Winter does not have to be that season when you are less active and lose track of healthy eating. In fact, there are several specific opportunities can can keep your good habits humming all year long even when it darker and colder out!

1. Take exercise Inside!

Putting on sneakers and going to gym may feel daunting when it is dark and cold out- so stay in! Find your favorite CD, make your own You tube playlist or DVD and rock on! Dance like a crazy person in your  own bedroom for 30-35 minutes (see one of my playlists on my YouTube channel link here!)  or while doing chores!!! Before you know it you will have completed a fun, plyometrics activity (jump up and down) all in the privacy of your own home and at no cost!!!

2. Soups and Stews!

We know the Winter has bad rep of luring us to comfort food but that can be healthy too! Make a huge pot of your favorite stew or soup that can last all week long! Use beans like lentils as base for stews and lean meats- yes that sounds like Turkey Chili or great Broth based soups with tons of veggies! Bone broth (read our article on bone broth here!) has been for centuries touted for its medicinal value- add leafy greens before serving so you don't overcook them!

3. Use Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables!

Buying fruits and veggies in their proper season guarantees a higher vitamin content and are usually cheaper. Winter faves are the cruciferous veggies like brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, artichokes (read Nutrition RX: Artichokes--King of Winter Vegetables here!) and citrus fruits like oranges and clementines (for Vitamin C), apples and pears (High in Fiber- keep skins on!).

4. Get Plenty of Sleep!

Sleep is simply the most restorative thing you can do for your body- do take time to get more. Turn your lights down and devices off so you can begin to wind down before bed- start a sleep ritual with a hot shower or reading. Remember if heat is on too high it may make it more difficult to fall asleep - keep room about 65 degrees and use a humidifier (cool mist).

5. Boost your Immune System! Flu and Cold season call for some extra protection. Eat balanced meals with fruits and vegetables, lots of water, some yogurt and kefir for probiotic activity (watch Nutrition RX: Dairy video here)  which builds gut bacteria and sip on bone broth- beef or chicken with fresh garlic and fresh ginger all day long!  (Watch here for more Foods that Boost Your Immune System!)
