Top Aphrodisiac Food
Valentine's Day is just around the corner, so if you want to set the mood for a romantic evening here are my top aphrodisiac foods!
What else is more romantic than a platter of chocolate covered strawberries? The plump, heart-shape, red flesh of fresh strawberries isn’t so bad either! Packed with Vitamin C and antioxidants, they’ll keep your blood flowing! Try my Drunken Strawberries recipe here to use as a dessert topping, on crostini or even in your salad!)
There’s a reason one of the most famous aphrodisiacs is oysters! They have a reputation to be great for love and fertility, and that may be because they are high in zinc and certain amino acids, which helps increase libido and the production of sex hormones! Having some raw oysters this V-Day is a must (try Bar 54 at the Hyatt and the Grand Central Oyster Bar!)
Now chocolate is a no-brainer, but do you know why? Its taste and aroma are perfect to set the mood, especially dark chocolate which has slew of compounds, like tryptophan and phenylethylamine, which release the feel-good and pleasure neurotransmitter dopamine and relaxation neurotransmitter serotonin. For dessert definitely stop by M’O Gelato in Little Italy for their 80% dark chocolate nerone sorbetto (dairy-free gelato, made with only chocolate and water! Watch here!)
Add some red-hot and spicy chili peppers to invigorate your night! Capsaicin, the chemical responsible for the heat in peppers, increases circulation to get your blood pumping, stimulates nerve endings and endorphins! Fair warning your heart rate may speed up and you may sweat, which mimics how you feel when you are falling in love!
Pomegranates have long been symbols of romance, fertility and abundance. How can it not when you crack open a thick rose orbs and see those bright red gems? The seeds (and juice) are filled with antioxidants that support blood flow and may even increase testosterone which can lead to heightened moods in both men and women!
