After having such a beautiful time at the Edible Academy at the New York Botanical Garden over the summer (remember Batali Family Dinners?), how could we pass up the chance to celebrate their Harvest Festival Weekend with a divine picnic?! Did I mention celebrity chefs Mario Batali and Carla Hall were there too?

There was an assortment of workshops for both adults & kids--pickle your own cucumbers, make your own tote, plant your own herbs, and a couple of trivia games involving nutritious food. Top Chef and The Chew’s Carla Hall was also promoting her new cookbook; you know we arrived to the right spot!
Soaking up the sun on this beautiful autumn Sunday, we enjoyed a delicious picnic lunch designed by Mario Batali! Grilled Chicken in Tapenade with Broccoli Rabe, fresh sweet corn and onion salad (btw kids had a chance to peel their own ears of corn!), and an almond-crusted fig tart! A perfect lunch celebrating the autumn harvest flavors and produce!
After relaxing in the grass, Mario Batali and Carla Hall conducted a cooking demonstration. Mario prepared farotto (farro risotto,) while Carla made her signature sweet potato tarte tatin (an upside down pie). The wonderful aroma dominated our senses!
Its always a fun time walking through the edible garden and getting a peek at the upcoming Edible Academy set to launch in 2016. “We’re very enthusiastic about this opportunity to teach city kids how to plant and cook their own food—food that they nurtured for and planted themselves,” said one very passionate Edible Academy staff member. He then led us to the back of the garden where they were serving children kale pesto with cucumbers—all grown from this garden!
We’re very excited of what the future holds for the Ruth Rea Howell Family Garden & The Edible Academy. Big thank you to NYBG for hosting us!!
