Watch Fall's Most Fabulous Foods on BronxNet OPEN here
Eating seasonal foods is really trendy right now. But unlike juice fasts, it actually is healthy for you! Foods consumed in the season they were meant to are more nutrient dense because of soil they are grown in and less transit time means more nutrients stay intact. They are also cheaper and have more flavor than when eaten out of season.
Here is the list in all their medicinal glory:
Cruciferous veggies: Brussel sprouts, kale, broccoli and cauliflower and cabbage -the very compounds make them gas-producing, the phytochemical sulforaphane, battle cancer fighting carcinogens in the body! They are also full of Vitamin C, A and Folic Acid
Cook: Great to buy raw and frozen. They can withstand steaming and steam bag microwaving and nutrients stay intact. Except for kale-best eaten raw.
Squash All varieties! Try butternut squash, pumpkin and spaghetti squash. Full of Vitamin C, Beta Carotene, magnesium and fiber
Cook: Bake, steam, sauté either frozen or fresh
Sweet Potato The potato's prettier sister and filled with beta carotene, magnesium and B6 and fiber
Cook: Roast, grill and smash, buy fresh or frozen
Figs A nutritional powerhouse with fiber, potassium and B6. Definitely better fresh than dry!
Apples Try all varieties but keep skins on! That is where all fiber is and they are high in Vitamin C. Use lemon to keep them from turning brown and while apple juice and cider are tasty they are nutritionally worthless.
Pears The skins must stay on like the apple- that is where the nutrients are stored, high in fiber, Vitamin C and B6
