Restaurant Review: Toro NYC
I partly blame myself for my experience at Toro. Partly. The rest I blame on Toro. I blame myself for going with a mostly conservative food crowd –unwilling to try the truly interesting morsels on the menu like Oreja De Cerdo Terrina (pig ear terrine with king crab and yuzu), Foie Gras Y Piquillo (seared foie gras with piquillo pepper, cider vinegar gastrique and candied walnuts), Paella De Conejo Y Lumach (rabbit and snail paella), Croquettas de Jamon Y Cabeza (ham and pigs head fritters), Panzo De Cerdo (pork belly) and Pato Con Membrillo (duck with quince glaze).
My last memory of Toro was in their Boston location 4 years ago which I loved-- cozy, dark exposed brick, warm and ohhhh the rabbit terrine with crusty bread. This time the space was large, noisy and freezing cold! I was shivering and eating, my senses dulled because my energy was being spent to increase my body temperature. They must draft proof that place-but the Verdad Y Amor helped me through.
This is what we shared and I pouted through:
Pimientos Del Padron (Spicy shishito peppers with sea salt) not my choice, they tasted like spicy peppers
Escalivada Catalana (smoked eggplant, onions, peppers and tomatoes with sherry vinegar and olive oil)-Great!
Croquetas De Bacalao (Salt cod fritters with tempura lemon rings and aioli) (Not my choice-I would have preferred the -like every croquettas di bacalao I ever had
Txipirones (Baby Squid with Toasted Bread and Farm Egg) Ok but underseasoned-had great potential though
Filete a La Plancha (Marinated skirt steak with cabrales butter and red onion marmalade) Rare,tough, chewy and I could barely cut it
Because I have such fond memories of Boston Toro and am a romantic, I want to try it again when I am not freezing my hoohaas off and when I am with a more adventurous crowd.
