Food Book Fair: Brew Pub

Brew Pub (Reprise) is a project by Portland-based artist Eric Steen, exploring home brewing as a form social activism by joining forces with home brewers to share their normally private passion with the public. Over 20 NYC home brewers were asked to make a beer inspired by the neighborhood around the Wythe Hotel where the Food Book Fair takes place--Greenpoint, Williamsburg.

With a selection of 25 beers to sample, each told a different story about the history of Williamsburg and what’s it has become. I’ll take you through some of my favorites.

“Captain Wit” by Louis Pelino

This white ale was a tribute to Brooklyn’s “first hipster,” Captain Pieter Janse Wit of the Dutch West Indian Company, who caught sight of the green lush land jutting into the East River.The light and refreshingly bitter ale was a great first taste, reeling you into the Brew Pub, so much so you’d want to purchase it, just like Captain Wit did with Greenpoint.

“It’s Crucial IPA” by Tony Bellis, Kings County Brewers Collective

This strong hop IPA takes you to an evening watching your favorite bands at the great venues around the Wythe Hotel. An easy IPA to drink throughout the night, “the delicious hop aroma would still smell fantastic even on your clothes or on the floor when somebody knocks it out of your hand while dancing!

”“Noorman” by Lars K. Huse & Kevin Jo Hansen (pfft..), in collaboration with Billingsgate brewing

The first recorded settler in Greenpoint was Dirck de Noorman, who is the namesake of Norman Avenue, near the Wythe Hotel. Described as a “farmhouse ale,” this beer style is typically brewed during the winter in the cooler farmhouses, and stored for drinking by farmers in the summer. Inspirited by the people, this very mild, with earthy ale takes you to a summer day along the East River.

“MJ” by Beer Loves Company, ALTernative

This sweet tan stout was aged on blonde roasted coffee beans and single malt infused oak. “MJ’s a hunter that will moonwalk all over your palate.” And it did! A deceptively sweet pale stout encompasses the transformation that Brooklyn has undergone, and is a tribute to all the trail blazers looking to push the envelope and create something new.

“Beer de Garden” by Stephen Durley & Hayley Jensen

Inspired by the small herb gardens in NYC, this biere de garde had hints of caramelized honey, basil, thyme, sage, rosemary, bay leaf, lemongrass, oregano, lavender, mint and tarragon. A definitely favorite, its slight sweetness yet dry finish definitely celebrated the coming of spring!

“Springtime in McCarren Park” by Brett Taylor (Brewery Brett), Bird on a Wire

Trying to escape our cold, dark extended winter and inspired by the sunny afternoons in McCarren Park, this “Berliner Weisse” was an effort “to will spring into being.” And it was a good effort! This refreshing, warm-weather beer gave a nod to the CSA/urban farming culture that is so strong in northern Brooklyn by adding fresh strawberries to the beer after fermentation!

“Bushwick Fig Dubbel” by Brandon West

Williamsburg and Bushwick have historically been identified with European immigrants, with a prominent Italian community after the turn of the century. This “Belgium Dubbel” was an ode to Italian landlord, Nico, who passed away last year. Nico planted a fig tree on the property and gave figs to the tenants. Such a rich beer, with a slight fig undertone, this dubbel was easily my favorite of the selection--a perfect way of telling a story through home brewery!
