For my sister's wedding we are getting her a "cheese cake" and I don't mean cheesecake, I mean wheels of cheese stacked on top of each other....because she and we are cheese heads! Thank goodness that we are not lactose intolerant because we would be in pain all the time and still eat the cheese.
DiPalo's- This family has been making cheese in Little Italy for over a 100 years. There is no other place in NYC where you can get the personal artisans a dice you need for your cheese plate. Lou and Sal Di Palo are behind the counter in this amazing store: Look out for their new book (DiPalo's Guide to the Essential Foods of Italy: 100 Years of Wisdom and Stories Behind the Counter) and our video (DiPalo Selects Traditional Italian Market)
Murray's Cheese Shop- Murray Greenburg opened this west village shop in 1940 and recently opened a cheese bar just next door. They have the lovely basics and some really exotic cheeses from all over the world. You can also buy some great cheese accessories too and put together a great hostess gift!
Saxelby Cheesemongers- They have a great cheese of the month program and located at the Essex Street Market. This market focuses on domestic, local cheeses and is not shy with samples!
Beecher's Handmade Cheese- Every time I walk buy I go in to steal a cheese sample. I love Seattle and this cheese- they make their own and buy their mac and cheese and sample their grilled cheese sandwiches in their shop.
Cheese Counter at Fairway Market- What the hell! I walked in the Kip's Bay location and it was a cheese fest- everything you would like for a last minute dinner party because you can shop for food at the same location. The prices are right too!
